Live Life Without Regret

If somebody were to open a time-machine business that allowed people to go back and fix their biggest regrets, business would be booming.

We all have things in our past that we could’ve done better and opportunities we let slip by. We all have things we wish we could change.

Nobody has invented the time machine yet. Thankfully, there are better ways to move past regret: realize you have opportunities, the power to change, and good things in your life.

Realize failure leads to opportunity

Regret is how we usually remember our failures. We tell ourselves things like, “I should have done this,” or “I should have said that,” even though we can’t change the past. We made all have these kinds of moments.

Escaping that feeling of regret can be very difficult, especially if we failed at something important. The best thing we can do in times of regret is realize that those moments are opportunities for us to grow.

Failures allow you to learn what not to do. They help you grow and become tougher. The best of the best have failed countless times. It’s what helps people become better. Getting knocked down is inevitable; use the opportunity to get back up stronger.

Understand you can change

Your book isn’t finished yet. You still have exciting chapters left to write. If you aren’t satisfied with some aspect of your life – whether it’s your health, family, career, or anything else – you have the power to change it.

Regret is counterproductive to change. It keeps you living in the past, afraid to take new chances. Instead, look forward to the day when you no longer think about the failure you’re mulling over. You will get there if you decide to put the work in.

Nobody is going to put the work in for you, and you probably don’t want them to. This is your life, and you know what you need better than anybody else. The power to change is in your hands.

Recognize what you have

Avoid looking at how green the grass on the other side is. Your grass is plenty green. Whether or not you are satisfied is up to you. You can want to improve, but you are healthy, you have people around you, and you can get better.

As humans, it’s natural to always look for the next improvement. Very rarely do we take the time to step back and appreciate what we already have as a result of what we’ve already done. Life is better when you aren’t constantly wanting to change yourself.

This week, remember what you’re thankful for. Take a moment to appreciate your journey. Life is good, the world is beautiful, and you are a part of it.
