If you’re skeptical about the title of this blog, we get it. Candy “alternatives” never live up to the hype. Nobody can pretend that some fruit tastes better than Skittles. A Snickers is always going to be delicious. You can’t say that about kale chips.
Halloween can get spooky for a healthy diet. Unlimited amounts of candy around every corner can haunt your waistline. By the end of the night, you may need to size up in your costume. Okay, that’s the last Halloween diet joke.
It’s okay to allow yourself to eat some candy. Use it as a cheat meal. A problem could arise when all that leftover candy is available during the first week of November. Those sales can be dangerous.
It might be hard, but you have to resist that temptation. That’s where we come in. These recipes probably won’t be as good as candy, but they might just scratch that sweet tooth itch.
Homemade popsicles
Homemade popsicles are a great option for meal prepping healthy snacks – and they’re easy to make. All you need is a popsicle mold, some popsicle sticks, and some creativity. You’ll get a pretty delicious treat with way less sugar than a traditional popsicle.
To make your own, blend some fresh fruit with water, milk, or juice and put them into the popsicle mold with a stick. Try it with yogurt if you want a creamier texture. Put them in the freezer and you’ll have them in no time!
Dark chocolate covered strawberries
Dark chocolate and berries are both loaded with antioxidants. These are also great for meal prepping. All you have to do is melt some semi-sweet dark chocolate, dip the strawberries into it, and put them in the freezer to cool.
These actually are really delicious and a solid substitute for candy. Just make sure not to eat too many, because the chocolate will be relatively high in sugar, though not still not as high as processed candy.
Protein milkshakes
There are a ton of fantastic protein powder options with great flavors, tons of protein, and not a lot of calories. They taste good on their own, but they can be improved with a blender and some ice.
Take your favorite protein powder and put a scoop or two into a blender. Then, add a cup of your favorite milk and some ice. Blend until your desired consistency and enjoy. Add things like peanut butter, chia seeds, or whatever else you’d like!
This option will not only taste delicious, but it’ll also keep you fuller and more energized than regular candy!
Chia seed pudding
Chia seeds are awesome. They’re high in fiber, protein, healthy fats which makes them a fantastic option for any meal or snack.
Chia seed pudding is one of the best ways to eat chia seeds. The texture is similar to a tapioca pudding. There are also a ton of great ways to spice it up and make it your own.
Take 3 tablespoons of chia seeds and put them into about 1 cup of liquid. It could be any kind of milk or water. Add a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost.
Enjoy it with the toppings of your choice! We like ours with peanut butter and jelly with some fresh strawberries.
