Steps to Visualize the Future!
It’s Friday, so that means it’s time to ‘celebrate.’
This week, the theme for our blogs is ‘endurance.’ Part of having endurance realizes there’s a long road ahead and continues anyway by celebrating what is yet to come.
How exactly do you celebrate the future? But if it hasn’t happened yet, is there even anything to celebrate? If you observe something that hasn’t happened, will it ever happen?
It isn’t about throwing a party; Visualization is how you celebrate the future. Picturing an accomplishment – seeing yourself cross the finish line in your mind – is a great way to keep yourself motivated. Like anything, effective visualization takes practice and commitment to getting better. Here are four ways to get the most out of visualization.
Know what you want – This seems obvious, but it can be neglected. To properly visualize yourself tackling a goal, you must know what you want. You must know when you want to get there, how you’re going to get there, and what steps you’re going to take.
Be specific here. Don’t just say, “I want to lose weight.” Say, “I want to lose these many pounds by this date.” Also, make sure you’re fully aware of what kind of commitment you’re making. Be confident that you will have the time, resources, and help you need to succeed in the way you want to.
Plan your daily actions – Create a plan to get what you want. Know what steps you need to take each day to get to that goal. Have a plan for what you need to do from when you wake up until you go to bed. You can and should visualize yourself taking these steps.
Plan things that you are going to enjoy. If you like walking, plan a time to walk. If you need to plan a cheat meal, plan a cheat meal. Make sure these daily actions are things that you will want to do. Whatever you choose, there will be days where you do not want to do it. Having something you like will make it easier to get out there.
Start visualizing – Say you want to lose weight. Start imagining the moment you reach your goal weight. Picture the scale on your bathroom floor, the light from the ceiling, and how you look in the mirror. Think about everything that might be in the room now that you accomplish that goal. Make it seem like a memory of something that hasn’t happened yet.
Plan out time every day to do this, maybe in the morning when you wake up or at night before you go to bed. The more you do it, the better it will get.
Soon, you’ll find the visualization transform into actual change.
Practice perseverance – Visualization isn’t precisely “celebrating.” The actual celebration will come when you achieve the goal. To get to that celebration, though, you need to persevere. Know what you want, plan how you’ll get there, visualize it, and then stick to the plan.
You’ll be celebrating on the other side of the finish line in no time.
