It is time to get out of your comfort zone.
Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”
That’s pretty good advice. You don’t have to go into a haunted house or watch a scary movie every day, but you should try to do something you’re intimidated by.
How often do you intentionally and actively step out of your comfort zone? Are you challenging yourself enough? Do you regularly seek out things that you’re intimidated by?
It’s human nature to avoid discomfort. It is entirely natural. However, challenging yourself by getting out of your comfort zone frequently is incredibly beneficial, and you should do it.
Stepping out of your comfort zone in any way, big or small, will help you in a lot of ways. Here’s a few of them:
You grow – Growth doesn’t come from doing the same thing over and over forever. Growth comes when you change something. Every time you work out, even if you do the same workout, something changes. Maybe you squeeze out a few extra reps or add more weight. Perhaps you go at a faster tempo. Whatever you do, you’re doing something different.
This methodology applies to life in general. If you’re stuck in a rut and doing the same thing every day, every week, every month, and every year, you’re not going to grow. On top of that, a sense of fulfillment will be hard to find.
You learn – Has there been something you thought you wouldn’t like, and when you tried it, you loved it? If you never take a leap of faith because of your preconceived notions of what it is, you’ll never learn.
Simply put, you can’t know what works for you if you don’t try it out. You’ve learned a lot of what you know now from experimenting with trial and error. Sure, you may not like whatever new thing you try. But even those negative experiences make the good ones seem even better.
You inspire – Stepping out of your comfort zone takes courage. The people on your team need to see courage. It inspires them, and it motivates them to do the same. Before you know it, the people around you will be more inclined to step out of their respective comfort zones.
When you inspire others, they encourage you in return. Once you have a team of people who constantly challenge themselves to grow and change, you’ll be more inclined to do the same.
This week…
Is there something you know you should try in your life but can’t find the courage to do it? Let’s see if you can change that this week. Make it a goal to give that thing your best shot.
If you can’t think of anything specific, think of some things you’ve been curious about. Maybe it’s some new food or a new workout. Perhaps even a new book or TV show you’ve meant to check out.
Try it out this week!
