Picking Yourself Up from a Bad Day

We all have bad days every now and then. It’s just a part of life. You can’t have sunshine without a little rain sometimes.

When you have a day where nothing seems to go your way, it’s easy to mentally spiral. Being able to pick yourself up when you have a bad day is a great skill to have.

If you’ve had a bad day recently, or if you want to prepare for the next time you feel down in the dumps, check out these tricks to pick yourself up:

Highlight the problem

In order to get yourself out from down in the dumps, you have to know what put you there in the first place. Maybe it was a bad day at work, a negative interaction with someone, or maybe you just slept wrong.

Once you know the problem, the solution will become clearer. You’ll have a better idea of what you’re up against tomorrow.

Live in the solution

Don’t dwell on the problem. Try to think only of what your next step is going to be. You don’t have to know exactly what to do, but you should start to think about how you can fix whatever issues came about during your day.

Take a second to jot down the bad things that happened. Then, brainstorm a few solutions that you can use the next day. It doesn’t have to be a complete plan, just a general idea of what went wrong and what you’re going to do to prevent it from happening again.

Distraction/ fun

One of the best things you can do after a long, tough day is have a good time. Maybe you like funny movies, playing sports, or cooking a good meal. Find something you love that will take your mind off of the stress of your day. Again, you don’t want to dwell on what’s already happened.

Exercise (even though you probably don’t want to) is a great way to distract yourself. Exercise has been shown to improve moods. Sweating and being physically active will naturally take your mind off bad things.

Lastly, sometimes, the best thing you can do after a tough day is hit the ultimate reset button: sleep. If you’re eager for the next day to start, get a jump on it and go to bed early.

Start tomorrow with a smile

Start your day off right. Get up early, eat a good breakfast, stretch, and get ready to crush the next day. Try saying some self-affirmations in the mirror. Do anything that will assure you get off to a great start.

Whatever you do, make sure you leave yesterday in the past. Focus on how you’re going to make today better than yesterday. You are the master of this new day. It can be whatever you want to make it. Decide to make it great.
