“Life’s persistent and most urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King Jr.
During the holiday season, we hear a lot about giving. We give thanks, we give gifts, and we give ourselves a fresh new start.
Giving – not taking – is one of the most important things you can do. We all want to leave a positive impact on the people and the world around us that lasts long after we’re gone. That requires giving.
Why give?
You are needed
This is the most basic reason to give back. Wherever you are, there are people and places that need your help. Your local park, homeless shelter, animal shelter, and many other things are always looking for extra hands.
People in your life – family and friends – also might need you. You may be surprised at what people are going through. This time of the year, it’s important to check-in with the people you care about the most. See how they’re doing.
It encourages others
When people see you giving back, they’ll be inspired to do it themselves. When more people are involved in making their community a better place, life gets better for everybody.
Be the light in someone’s life. Inspire people with your generosity and compassion. It will make the world around you a better place and give you new experiences you never thought you would have.
How do I give?
Donate
The easiest way to donate is by giving food, clothes, or money to people and organizations who are in need of them. It doesn’t take a lot of time and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Giving anything can help someone, and that’s worth something.
You can also donate your time by volunteering. There are countless organizations that are looking for a variety of different things for a variety of different causes. Whatever your skills are, they’re needed somewhere.
Talk and encourage
Talk to the people you know are struggling. Sometimes they just need a listening ear. You can be that for them. If you know someone in your life who has been going through a tough time, reach out to them and see if there is any way you can help them!
Also, encourage others to join you as you give back. Build a team around you that’s committed to making the world a better place. They’ll recruit their own team, and the world will keep getting better.
