If you’ve ever done a fad diet, tried to cut a lot of weight in not a lot of time, or seen the scale jump up and down, you know sustaining results is not easy.
Making lifestyle changes is not supposed to be easy. You have to do it anyway. That said, there are some ways you can make it easier on yourself.
Here are four different ways to make sustaining your results easier:
Remember where you started
Change doesn’t come overnight. When you’re in a routine, sometimes it feels like you’re a hamster on a wheel. That feeling can make you want to give up.
Instead, remember how far you’ve come. Look back on who you were before you made the changes that brought you to where you are now.
Your work is not for nothing. If you stop, eventually you will regress and have to start all over again. You definitely do not want to do that.
Have an accountability partner
It’s hard to do things alone all the time. It’s also hard to keep yourself honest. Accountability partners make both things easier.
Nobody is perfect. We all make slip up and mistakes sometimes. We need someone to tell us to get back on the right track when we can’t find the motivation ourselves.
Check in with your accountability partner regularly. Make sure they know your goals and what your routine is. Ask them to be honest with you as they assess your progress.
Don’t skip twice
Life is busy. We have things we weren’t expecting pop up all the time. Sometimes, we’re forced to skip important things in our routine.
Whether it’s a last-minute work task, a new opportunity, or you just need an extra day off, make sure you don’t skip twice. Allow yourself one – and only one – free pass.
You don’t have to be hard on yourself when you don’t get in the gym. The key is to not make a habit out of it. Don’t let yourself get too comfortable.
Set goals
Goals should always be the base on which you build your routine. You should know what you want and have a plan to get there.
If you don’t have goals, you won’t have motivation. You won’t be able to feel excited about what’s at the finish line. You’ll be roaming aimlessly hoping you find some success. Eventually, you’ll get lost.
Be intentional, be specific, be realistic. Aim for something you can reach while working hard. Then build a sustainable routine and stick to it.
