What makes you a good role model? How do you become somebody who people look up to?
You probably have people in your life that you look up to, people who motivate you to be better just by being themselves. They’re successful, they’re confident, and they’re kind.
We all want to be somebody that people look up to. We all want to be there for the people in our life that we care about. Becoming somebody like that takes time and effort.
How do you become that? You have to work on sharpening the common traits that all good role models have. A good role model is…
Confident – Great role models are people who are positive and confident in their abilities. They’ve messed up in their past, but they’ve also found a lot of success. They know how they can help you.
Confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s the way you carry yourself as someone who knows exactly who they are. It’s knowing that you are a professional who can help others.
Knowledgeable – While confidence is important, it means nothing if the person doesn’t know what they’re doing. One of the worst things a role model can do is provide bad information to someone who asks for their advice.
When somebody asks you for help, don’t give them an answer unless you know what you’re talking about. If you don’t know something, tell them that and maybe try to help them find an answer from another source. This will let them know you’re there for them no matter what.
Unique – Not everybody finds success. That’s just the way it is. By finding success, you separate yourself from a lot of people. This makes you a role model in and of itself.
Your experience is unique. You know how to fix problems in a different way than anybody else. Use this to your advantage. You can help people with what you know.
Respectful – A role model knows how to lead people with kindness. They don’t use destructive criticism to take down people who look up to them. They want to help; they need to help.
When someone asks a good role model for help, they don’t act better than them. They help in any way that they can. They use their experience to help others in a respectful way.
A good listener – Nobody likes someone who can only talk about themselves. Being a good listener is essential for a good role model. They need to be able to hear another person’s problems and empathize with them.
When someone comes to you with advice, don’t immediately try to fix it for them. Listen intentionally to their entire issue. Then tell them the steps you took to fix a similar problem.
Humble – Being a good role model is not something you just become overnight. It’s a side effect of the success you find while living a happy and healthy lifestyle. A good one may not even know they are a role model.
Humility is an important trait for anybody who wants to be successful and well-liked. It opens you up to new growth, new experiences, and new opportunities.
By practicing these traits, you’ll find yourself inspiring and changing the people around you for the better.
